    maybe the answer articulates a tension at the core of our western culture: (only) the surface is always real (postmodern), the surface is never real (high modernism)...

      noumenon or phenomenon? surface or what is under the surface? i'm not sure that either is real, perhaps only the action of questioning ...

      i envy frogs, who never bruise themselves on such quandaries (as far as i know :-)))
