i am completely fascinated with that yellow on the background of pure blue - and with the word 'awning', at first i read awe-ning and imagined it would be some strange derivative of awe, a quite inspired reading, i would say :-)
Sunshine. I love the outposts at the beach off season on Lake Michigan where ice cream is sold in summer. There is a slight melancholy, but in your photo, the yellow offsets that.
Roxana: inspired :-) a reading that brings such a lofty sentiment into contact with such a ordinary, matter-of-fact object!! you unite the earth and the sky ...
these blocks of flat color, this geometry, like a child's blocks :-)
Ruth: off-season is the best time at the beach. in the summer i avoid the crowds and the heat, but autumn and winter are lovely, with wind and sun (and gray days and ice, too) and the long, sideways screams of the gulls ...
Yes, it's the best time. Once I went to Hoffmaster Beach and climbed the ice wall that had blown up and frozen by the water, and sat there perched for a while. Treacherous glory. :-)
Ruth: i've done that, too -- a practice of questionable wisdom, though maybe being always safe is just as questionable. this picture is from st. joseph, michigan -- is that anywhere near you?
I prefer beaches like this to crowded ones. The color in that awning made me think they was wanting to bring sun shine all year round. Not to mention I'm sure any airplane going over head will beable to spot it:)
Liz: i prefer these beaches, too :-) color was what i liked first about this photo -- that yellow seems to float, almost as if it is about to detach itself from the building ...
I keep reading the 'yellow awning' as 'yawning' :) and that's precisely what I'd like to do on this beach - have a nap in that luxurious sand! the bright yellow and blue is so mediterranean though the sea looks kind of wild!

ReplyDeleteIntense and painterly, like a Hopper of a brilliant, but desolate beach.

Hannah: sometimes the world is simply this :-)
ReplyDeleteLucia: i love the beach when it is cold and deserted ... in the summer, it is a different story altogether ....
ReplyDeleteI used to go to the beach during winter, and many times I felt I had all the beach for myself...
DeleteLucia: a winter beach all to oneself -- like the last person left alive, walking to the edge of the world :-)
DeleteDeb: thank you. thank you :-)

DeleteJane: hopper!! possibly my favorite american painter :-) i think i live in those deserted landscapes flooded with light ...
